Living miserably because of being "attacked" by flies
In the memory of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ty (Lai Son village, Trung Gia commune), Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex used to operate quite stably for about 15 years, rarely encountering reactions from the people.
In 2011, Hanoi expanded the landfill by 73.73ha (from the initial 83ha) with 8 landfills. Before expansion, the landfill was about 300m from Ms. Ty's house, but then it was only... a wall away. Hundreds of households like her became residents in a 500m radius polluted area.
Recently, the changing seasonality has caused flies to break out, many households in Lai Son village have been "attacked", life is turned upside down. From early morning, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ty has to go 5km to buy mosquito repellent.
In her small house, fly glue pieces are hung and placed scattered everywhere, each piece is densely packed with fly carcasses. However, according to Ms. Ty, these glue pieces are still not enough to control the increasing number of flies. At this time, the family is forced to buy more powdered medicine, mixed with water to spray all over the house.
Just put out a piece of glue and flies will clump all over. Just sitting still will also cling to your body. After spraying medicine, it will be better for a few days and then everything will be back to square one" - Ms. Ty shared.
Mosquitoes appear all over the living space, from the living room, kitchen to the dining table. They cling tightly to doors, walls, utensils, even clothes; just arranging food for a few minutes, they are already densely packed, causing many families to cover up continuously.
In the same situation, Mr. Nguyen Cong Bien (Lai Son village, Trung Gia commune) said that his family has lived here for nearly 30 years. Meals must also be eaten quickly because of flies, so he hopes to be relocated soon. However, the implementation of the plan is still slow and there are still many obstacles.
Mr. Bien said that his family received a compensation, support and compensation plan at the beginning of 2025, and was allocated 240m2 of resettlement land.
However, the implementation process has many inadequacies that make families and some households concerned.
His family has more than 3,000m2 of land, of which 1,200m2 is residential land. When completing procedures, he was asked to adjust the residential land area from 1,200m2 to 400m2, but he did not agree. After that, he was notified that the land use right certificate had been cancelled since 2021, although the family did not receive the notice and still kept the original.
Regarding compensation, the family is priced at 86,640 VND/m2 according to the old level, while the financial obligations for resettlement land are calculated according to the new price of more than 1.8 million VND/m2.
The application of two price levels makes us feel unreasonable. I hope functional agencies will review it to avoid disadvantages for families and households, helping people feel secure and stabilize their lives" - Mr. Bien proposed.
There are support policies but it is difficult to fully compensate for the impact
Regarding the situation of flies "attacking" people's houses, Ms. Bui Thi Thuy Ngan - Head of the Economic Department of Trung Gia commune - informed that households living within a radius of 0-500m around the Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex are directly affected.
According to Ms. Ngan, although the complex has implemented handling procedures according to regulations, it is difficult to thoroughly overcome the arising problems.
Bad odors are inevitable. The situation of flies is also the same, especially at peak times, the number of flies and larvae increases a lot. When the weather changes, flies thrive" - Ms. Ngan said.
She said that about half a month ago, many areas, even far from the landfill, still had dense flies, greatly affecting people's lives.
According to the leader of the Economic Department of Trung Gia commune, the city has implemented many support policies such as health insurance, clean water, and environmental sanitation at 100%. However, these supports are still difficult to fully compensate for the prolonged impacts that people have to suffer.
Disinfection spraying is still maintained; previously carried out by the Health Center, now assigned to local health stations. However, social security policies still cannot fully compensate for the negative impacts on people's lives" - Ms. Ngan said.
