On June 10, the MAG bomb and mine advisory group in Vietnam said that they had just received and safely handled a 227kg aircraft bomb discovered under the Son River, in Phong Nha commune, Quang Tri province, about 150m from the local tourist wharf.
The bomb left over from the war was discovered by Mr. Khoi, who with his family runs a homestay business serving tourists, while swimming near his family's fish cage area in the morning.
After discovering the object suspected to be a bomb, realizing the danger of unsafety for fishermen, boat owners and tourists who regularly pass through the area, Mr. Khoi quickly reported the news to the local authorities on the same morning.
MAG forces deployed a handling plan. With the support of Mr. Khoi, his father and a local resident, the bomb and mine disposal team safely recovered the bomb and transported it for destruction according to regulations.
Phong Nha was honored by the World Travel Awards as the leading National Park in Asia in 2025, attracting a large number of tourists to visit the river system, caves and natural landscapes.
In the first quarter of 2026, this World Natural Heritage site welcomed more than 150,000 visitors.
According to MAG, the discovery of a 227kg aircraft bomb right next to the operating tourist boat wharf area shows that the danger of bombs and mines left over from the war is still present in many places where people live, work and frequently pass by.
The work of clearing and handling bombs and mines is considered to play an important role in ensuring safety, security and sustainable development for the local community.
MAG also sent thanks to Mr. Khoi and his family for their quickness and active support in the process of handling the incident, contributing to protecting the safety of people and tourists.
The unit recommends that when detecting objects suspected of being bombs and mines, people need to keep a safe distance and immediately report to the bomb and mine handling hotline of Quang Tri province via number 0901 941 941.
MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international non-governmental organization engaged in humanitarian activities to search, clear and destroy mines, cluster bombs and unexploded ordnance. MAG has been present in Vietnam since 1999, highly concentrated in central provinces such as Quang Tri.
