Vietnam Electricity Group - EVN said that as of 2:00 p.m. on September 7, due to the impact of very strong winds and heavy rains of storm No. 3 Yagi, many 500kV and 220kV power transmission lines in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong areas had problems, and some power transmission lines were proactively cut off to ensure safety.
Regarding the distribution grid, EVN representative said that due to the impact of the storm, by 2:00 p.m. on September 7, almost all of the load in Quang Ninh province and 80% of the load in Hai Phong city had lost power due to problems with many medium-voltage lines.
After the storm passes and strong winds gradually decrease, the restoration of operations and power supply will be urgently deployed.
Information from the Northern Power Corporation also said that at 1:00 p.m. on September 7, Typhoon Yagi directly affected the mainland provinces of Quang Ninh - Hai Phong. The storm was at level 11-12, with gusts of level 13-14, causing power supply interruptions to many customers in these two provinces and cities.
The storm caused a breakdown of 76 medium voltage lines and disrupted power supply to more than 238,000 customers in Quang Ninh. An estimated 40% of customers in the province lost power. The affected areas were mainly in Mong Cai, Hai Ha, Binh Lieu, Tien Yen, Ba Che, Van Don, Co To, Ha Long, and Quang Yen.
Quang Ninh Electricity Company has mobilized more than 600 staff members to be on duty at units to be ready to fix problems immediately after the storm subsides.
In Hai Phong city, the storm caused widespread power outages, with a total of about 400,000 customers without power.
In Thai Binh, the storm's impact also caused many medium-voltage power grid problems, causing about 570,000 customers to lose power.
In Thanh Hoa, as of 2:00 p.m. on September 7, there was heavy rain. The number of customers without power was nearly 12,000.
Power companies have prepared sufficient human resources, materials, and equipment so that after the storm, they can promptly check, fix problems, and restore power to customers.
Previously, on the evening of September 6, due to the impact of storm No. 3, thunderstorms and strong winds in Vinh Phuc province caused many trees to fall and corrugated iron roofs to fly into the power lines, causing a breakdown of 10 medium-voltage power lines, disrupting power supply over a large area in Tam Dao, Tam Duong, Yen Lac, Vinh Tuong districts and Vinh Yen city. With a spirit of effort and careful response preparation, by 10:00 p.m. on September 6, Vinh Phuc Electricity Company had resolved the problem and restored power supply to all customers.
Also on the evening of September 6, in Ba Be district, Bac Kan province, heavy rain and whirlwinds caused many large trees to break, fall and fly onto the power grid, causing a power outage in the area. Ba Be Electricity Company immediately fixed the problem that night, and by 3am on September 7, the problem had been fixed and power had been restored to customers.
In Hai Phong, according to a quick report, heavy rain and level 15 winds have caused a power outage on 6 110 kV lines (currently A1 has not been closed yet), a total power outage in Cat Hai; power outage on over 50 medium lines and about 300,000 customers have lost power.
The Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of the Northern Power Corporation and other units have been on duty and closely monitoring the developments of storm No. 3 to have timely and safe incident handling plans.
