35 tons of pigs positive for banned substances, 80 pigs still infected with cholera

Ho Chi Minh City - Functional agencies discovered 3 batches of pigs of more than 35 tons testing positive for banned substances, including 1 batch testing positive for African swine fever virus.

A batch of 80 pigs was both contaminated with banned substances and tested positive for African swine fever virus.

On July 30, the Ho Chi Minh City Sub-Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine sent a quick report to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Agriculture and Environment on the inspection and detection of 3 batches of pigs using banned chemicals belonging to the Beta-Agonist group (Salbutamol, Clenbuterol) in animal husbandry.

Accordingly, on July 26, after receiving information, the Head of the Sub-Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine directed an inter-sectoral inspection team to coordinate with relevant departments, branches, and units to organize surprise inspections of vehicles transporting animals on key traffic routes, gateways to and from Ho Chi Minh City.

Through inspection, 3 cases of transporting pigs were found with urine samples tested positive for banned substances belonging to the Beta-Agonist group (Salbutamol, Clenbuterol) with a total of 280 fattening pigs, weighing 35,350 kg; including a batch of 80 pigs with a combined blood sample test positive for African swine fever virus.

At 6:30 pm on July 26, on National Highway 1A, Trung My Tay ward, Ho Chi Minh City (intersection area of Dong Tien and National Highway 1A), the inspection team discovered a truck with license plate number 60K-548. xx driven by Mr. P.T. P transporting 80 pork, the owner of the goods is Mr. N.D. T.

The inspection team took 4 samples of pig urine to quickly test for the use of banned substances belonging to the Beta-Agonist (Salbutamol) group, the results were 4/4 samples positive for the banned substance Salbutamol. After that, the inspection team used 4 samples of collected urine to send to the Central Center for Diagnostic and Veterinary Testing II for quantitative testing; at the same time, 16 combined blood samples were taken for testing for African swine fever virus. The results were 4 samples of urine positive for banned substance Salbutamol, 2 samples simultaneously positive for banned substance Clenbuterol; 6/16 combined blood samples positive for African swine fever virus.

In the second case, at 7:30 PM on July 26th, the inspection team discovered a truck with license plate 64H-051. xx driven by Mr. T.K. B, who is also the cargo owner, transporting 115 fattening pigs. Through inspection, it was recorded that 1 pig died and 1 pig showed signs of lethargy and fatigue. The inspection team took 4 pig urine samples to quickly test for the use of banned substances belonging to the Beta-Agonist group (Salbutamol), the results showed that 3/4 of the urine samples were positive for the banned substance Salbutamol.

After that, the inspection team sealed and sent the above 4 urine samples to the Central Veterinary Diagnosis and Testing Center II for quantitative testing; and at the same time brought the batch of pigs to temporarily seize at Sagri Livestock and Food Processing Company to take 23 blood samples to send to the Central Veterinary Diagnosis and Testing Center II for testing African swine fever virus. As a result, 4 urine samples were positive for the banned substance Salbutamol, 1 sample was also positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol; 23/23 blood samples did not detect African swine fever virus.

In the third case, at 9 pm on July 26, the inspection team discovered a truck with license plate number 60K-955. xx driven by Mr. V.N. H, transporting 85 pork. At the time of inspection, no signs of abnormal health were recorded in the batch of pigs. The inspection team took 2 samples of pig urine to quickly test for the use of a banned substance belonging to the Beta-Agonist (Salbutamol) group, the results of 2/2 urine samples were positive for the banned substance Salbutamol.

After that, the team sealed and sent the above 2 urine samples to the Central Veterinary Diagnosis and Testing Center II for quantitative testing; and at the same time brought the batch of pigs to temporarily seize at Sagri Livestock and Food Processing Company to take 17 combined blood samples to send to the Central Veterinary Diagnosis and Testing Center II for testing African swine fever virus. As a result, 2 urine samples were positive for the banned substance Salbutamol, 2 samples were also positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol; 17/17 blood samples did not detect African swine fever virus.

Destroying all 3 batches of pigs contaminated with banned substances and African swine fever virus

Mr. Tran Phu Cuong - Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Sub-Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine - said: The Sub-Department has coordinated with relevant agencies and units to prepare dossiers and supervise the destruction of all 3 batches of pigs including 280 meat pigs, with a total weight of 35,350 kg. The destruction was carried out according to the voluntary requests of the pig lot owners, under the supervision of the inter-sectoral inspection team and relevant units, ensuring requirements for veterinary hygiene, disease prevention and control, and environmental protection.

The Sub-Department said that it is continuing to coordinate with the Economic Police Department, Ho Chi Minh City Police and relevant agencies and units to consolidate dossiers, verify violations and handle cases of transporting pigs using banned substances according to regulations.

At the same time, strengthen surprise inspections of vehicles transporting animals and animal products into the city, especially on key traffic routes, gateways to and from the City.

Continue to advise the Department of Agriculture and Environment to report and propose to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to direct departments, branches, and localities to strengthen inspection and control of the transportation and trading of animals and animal products; promptly detect and strictly handle acts of using banned substances in animal husbandry.
