Ho Chi Minh City studies ranking the mass grave of martyrs at Le Thi Rieng Park

Ho Chi Minh City researches and evaluates the historical and cultural value of the mass grave area of martyrs at Le Thi Rieng Park, as a basis for preparing dossiers to propose relic ranking.

On September 7, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee issued a document directing relevant units to study a plan to preserve the mass grave area of martyrs at Le Thi Rieng Park, Hoa Hung ward.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports is assigned to preside over surveying, assessing the current situation, collecting, verifying and systematizing documents on the process of discovering, searching, excavating, and repatriating martyrs' remains and related documents.

Based on the research results, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports advised the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to prepare a scientific dossier proposing relic ranking.

In case there is sufficient basis to propose a national relic ranking, Ho Chi Minh City will carry out procedures to request opinions from the state management agency on cultural heritage at the Central level.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports is also assigned to study a plan to zone protection, build memorial steles, introduction steles and appropriate items to preserve and promote the value of the site.

During the study period, Hoa Hung Ward People's Committee coordinated with the management unit of Le Thi Rieng Park to maintain the status quo of the related area. Do not arbitrarily relocate, renovate, build or carry out activities that may affect the historical factors of the location without permission from competent authorities.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also assigned the City Command to provide dossiers and documents related to the combat and sacrifice process of officers and soldiers; the process of discovering, searching, excavating and repatriating remains in the area.

Diagrams, maps, images, witness accounts and related documents are also required to be collected to serve historical value assessment and scientific dossier preparation of relics.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Home Affairs is responsible for reviewing and providing dossiers and documents related to martyrs searched for and gathered in the mass grave area within its management scope. The Department coordinates to verify information about the number, identity of martyrs and related dossiers if any.

Le Thi Rieng Park area is the collective burial place of many officers and soldiers who sacrificed in the General Offensive and Uprising of Spring Mau Than 1968.

According to the Repatriation Team of Martyrs' remains under the Ho Chi Minh City Command, from June 23, 2026 to September 5, 2026, functional forces discovered and repatriated 582 sets of martyrs' remains, of which 273 sets contained artifacts at 8 collective grave locations, including 2 locations in Zone A and 6 locations in Zone B.
