Not having had time to harvest rice after the impact of storms and rains, now 5 hectares of summer-autumn rice of Ms. Nguyen Nhu Ha (Long My district, Hau Giang province) is again threatened by high tides and heavy rains.
"The continuous rain could not cut the rice and it fell down. Now the water in the rivers is rising. My husband is on duty in the fields, building banks and pumping water to save the rice. Now we just have to wait for 1-2 days of sunny weather to be able to cut the rice. The damage caused by the rain is about 50%," said Ms. Ha.
With the same worries, 6 hectares of 2024 autumn-winter rice crop of Mr. Tran Van Ty (49 years old, Vi Thuy district) continues to be threatened for the second time.
Mr. Ty said: "When I first sowed, it rained, the seeds did not grow, so I had to sow a second time, which cost more. Now the rice is forming ears, but it rained heavily, the water in the canals inside the fields is high, I have to continuously pump out the water."
According to statistics from the Branch of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Forestry of Hau Giang province, in Long My district, initially, more than 140 hectares of summer-autumn rice were recorded to have fallen due to storms and rains, with a fall rate of 10-40%; more than 46 hectares of autumn-winter rice were flooded in Long My and Chau Thanh A districts.
According to the Southern Institute of Water Resources Planning, due to the impact of storm No. 3 and floods from the upper Mekong River, the tide is rising. In the next 1-2 weeks, floods in the upper Mekong River may increase sharply. The peak of the September flood is likely to appear around September 19-22.
In the Mekong Delta, the peak tide is likely to be much higher than the average of many years and is generally close to alert level 2, with Ganh Hao station being higher than alert level 3.
The Crop, Plant Protection and Forestry Branch of Hau Giang province has directed localities to closely monitor forecast bulletins, reinforce embankments, dams, clear water flows, actively pump water to prevent flooding for rice and other crops, and take advantage of favorable weather to quickly harvest ripe rice areas to limit damage...
