Reducing labor capacity for environmental workers
In many streets and small alleys in the inner city of Hanoi, compact 2-wheeled garbage collection vehicles with flexible mobility are gradually being introduced to partially replace the manual collection method.
With its small size, vehicles can conveniently move through crowded streets, sidewalks and narrow alleys, and areas where large sanitation vehicles are difficult to access.
Records in areas such as: Hoan Kiem, Cua Nam, O Cho Dua show that 2-wheeled electric vehicles support workers in picking up, collecting and transporting garbage scattered on the streets.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Tuyet - Deputy Head of Environment Team No. 1 (Hoan Kiem Branch) - said that before, workers had to push trash cans weighing hundreds of kilograms through many small alleys, which was quite hard work. Since having 2-wheeled electric vehicles to support, the work has become lighter, and the collection time has also been shortened. Labor productivity has increased, and garbage is collected by workers as soon as it is generated.
Limit accumulated garbage and leachate on the road
According to the operating unit, the use of 2-wheeled electric vehicles also helps overcome some limitations of manual collection methods in crowded residential areas. Vehicles can access deeper alleys, thereby maintaining the collection frequency at temporary collection points and limiting the situation of garbage accumulation, causing unsightliness or odor.
A noteworthy point is the control of waste leachate during transportation. According to the operating plan, workers line bags in containers and carry out waste transfer, helping to limit wastewater flowing directly into the road surface causing pollution.
At the same time, electric vehicles do not generate direct emissions in the operating area and operate more smoothly than vehicles using internal combustion engines. This is also one of the directions expected to contribute to promoting the use of green vehicles in urban environmental sanitation.
Besides the vehicle factor, people's awareness is also identified as an important factor to improve collection efficiency. Propaganda and mobilization of people to dispose of garbage on time and in the right places helps workers be more proactive in the process of performing tasks.
Representatives of the operating management unit said that through actual implementation, 2-wheeled electric vehicles help reduce operating and maintenance costs compared to vehicles using fossil fuels. Labor productivity of workers is recorded to increase by about 20-30%.
According to Mr. Bui Ngoc Tu - Head of Technical and Technology Department, Hanoi Urban Environment Co., Ltd. (URENCO), in the coming time, the unit will continue to coordinate with functional agencies to survey and complete the charging station system and research equipment standardization to be able to replicate the model.
The introduction of 2-wheeled electric vehicles in garbage collection is considered a step in the process of mechanizing environmental sanitation maintenance, aiming to reduce manual labor, improve collection efficiency and gradually switch to more environmentally friendly vehicles.
