At about 9:30 am on February 28, a truck carrying rice traveling on Nguyen Trong Quyen street (Thuan Hung ward, Can Tho city) across 30-4 bridge to enter provincial road 921 from Trung Nhut ward suddenly collapsed the middle span of the bridge.
According to witnesses, when the car reached the middle of the bridge, the main span suddenly collapsed into the Thot Not canal. The front of the car sank along the bridge span, many bags of rice fell into the canal. The male driver managed to open the door to escape and shouted for help, the incident did not record any casualties.
The incident caused local traffic disruption between the two wards. Notably, the Thot Not canal - an important waterway transporting rice and agricultural materials of the area - was also temporarily paralyzed due to the bridge span blocking the flow.
Mr. Le Hoang Giang - Vice Chairman in charge of Thuan Hung Ward People's Committee said that the authorities of the two localities have coordinated with functional forces to completely blockade 30-4 bridge, including both motorbike lanes on both sides, and at the same time guide people to travel according to a replacement route about 3-4km long.
Currently, functional forces are urgently mobilizing vehicles and equipment to lift the collapsed bridge span ashore, soon ensuring safety for waterway vehicles passing through the canal. The cause of the incident is being further investigated and clarified.
