This is the first time BYD has surpassed the 4 million vehicle/year milestone. Of these, 1,764,992 are pure electric vehicles (BEVs), up 12% from 1.6 million in 2023. BEVs account for 41.5% of BYD's total sales in 2024. The number of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and BYD sold is 2,485,378, up 72.8% from 1.4 million in 2023. PHEVs account for 58.5% of the company's total sales.

Previously, BYD had stopped producing vehicles using only internal combustion engines from April 2022 to focus on new energy vehicles such as BEVs, PHEVs and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs). However, in China, FCEV sales are very small, accounting for only 0.06% in 2023.

BYD's sales report includes both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. In December 2024, the company sold 509,440 passenger cars, up 49.8% over the same period in 2023. This is the third consecutive month that BYD has surpassed the 500,000-vehicle milestone. Total passenger car sales in 2024 reached 4,250,370 units. Meanwhile, commercial vehicle sales in December 2024 were 5,369 units, up 520%. Total commercial vehicle sales in 2024 were 21,775 units.

Also in December 2024, BYD exported 57,154 vehicles abroad, up 58%. In 2024, the company sold a total of 417,204 vehicles outside China, up 71.9%. In addition to cars, BYD is also the second largest battery supplier in China with customers including Tesla, Nio and Toyota. BYD created 23.5 GWh of battery capacity in December 2024, up 32% compared to 2023. In 2024, the total battery capacity set by the company reached a record of 194.7 GWh, up 29% (including batteries for electric vehicles and stationary energy storage systems).
