Using your feet to steer a car and causing an accident can result in a fine of up to 70 million VND

From 2025, drivers who use their feet to steer the wheel and cause accidents will be fined up to 70 million VND. This is the highest fine for drivers who violate traffic regulations.

Decree No. 168/2024/ND-CP on penalties and deduction of driving license points for violations of regulations on conditions for motor vehicle drivers takes effect from January 1, 2025 (Decree 168).

Article 6 of Decree 168 stipulates penalties and deduction of driving license points for drivers of automobiles, four-wheeled motorized passenger vehicles, four-wheeled motorized cargo vehicles and similar vehicles violating road traffic rules.

Accordingly, Clause 13 of Article 6 imposes a fine of 50,000,000 VND to 70,000,000 VND on drivers who commit violations specified in Clause 12 of this Article and cause traffic accidents.

Clause 12, Article 6: Fine from 40,000,000 VND to 50,000,000 VND for drivers who zigzag or swerve on the road; speed or chase each other on the road; use their feet to control the steering wheel while the vehicle is running on the road.

This is the highest penalty for car drivers violating road traffic rules under the new Decree.

According to the old regulations in Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, amended by Decree 123/2021/ND-CP, the highest fine for car drivers violating road traffic regulations is only from 30,000,000 VND to 40,000,000 VND.

(The previous highest penalty offences were:

Driving a vehicle on the road with a blood or breath alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams/100 milliliters of blood or exceeding 0.4 milligrams/1 liter of breath.

Failure to comply with the request for alcohol testing by an officer on duty.

Driving on the road while under the influence of drugs.

Failure to comply with the request for drug testing by an officer on duty).

Also according to Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, amended by Decree 123/2021/ND-CP, the violations of driving in a zigzag manner; speeding and chasing each other on the road; using the feet to control the steering wheel while the vehicle is running on the road were previously fined from VND 10,000,000 to VND 12,000,000.
