A total of 226,118 Santa Fe and Elantra vehicles manufactured from 2021 - 2022 are at risk of not displaying images when reversing on the center screen.
The reason is believed to be that the high temperature generated by the camera during operation can create cracks, causing signal loss. This causes a lot of difficulty for the driver when reversing.
On the other hand, federal motor vehicle standards in the United States require all new vehicles sold since May 2018 to have a functioning rearview camera.
Hyundai and its suppliers have known about the issue for a long time, and a new, improved version of the camera is available and has been used on new vehicles since April 2022. Vehicles subject to the recall can go to their dealer to have this upgraded camera replaced free of charge.
Hyundai is not the first automaker to recall cars due to faulty rearview cameras. Tesla issued a similar recall earlier this year. Ford, Honda, Porsche, Bentley, Jeep, Ram, Audi, VW, Kia, Infiniti, and others have all had problems with their rearview camera technology.
