On average, Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital needs to provide about 500 units of blood per day, equivalent to 3,500 - 4,000 units/week to 76 medical facilities in the Mekong Delta region.
However, currently, the amount of blood reserved at the Hospital is low, the source of blood donation is decreasing and there are no signs of improvement.
In August, the demand for blood in the Mekong Delta was about 14,000 units. Meanwhile, the current blood donation registration schedule is only about 5,000 units, not meeting 50% of the needs of medical facilities to serve the treatment of patients.
"As the unit responsible for receiving and supplying blood products, we are truly sorry and sympathetic to see our colleagues from hospitals not afraid to travel long distances, always ready to go to the hospital to receive each unit of blood when there is an emergency," the hospital representative shared.
To prevent blood supply from being interrupted, the Hospital urgently calls for the cooperation of the community, and is in great need of new hearts and more people willing to share precious drops of blood.
It is known that in recent times, Departments, agencies, departments, unions, associations, clubs... have actively called for and organized many blood donation points. Medical facilities not only use blood economically but also directly participate in blood donation, contributing to the supplementation of valuable blood sources in difficult times.
Previously, the People's Committee of Can Tho City also issued an official dispatch on strengthening propaganda, mobilization and organization of voluntary blood donation in the area.
The Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City assigned the Chairman of the City Red Cross Society, Chairmen of the People's Committees of communes and wards, based on their assigned functions and tasks, to coordinate with relevant agencies and units to promote propaganda, mobilization and organization of voluntary blood donation activities in accordance with local conditions, contributing to ensuring blood supply for emergency care and treatment of patients.
