On June 1, 2025 alone, the Department of Emergency - Intensive Care - Artificial kidney, Cam Khe District Medical Center (Phu Tho province) received 7 patients for emergency treatment due to heat and fever, including 1 patient in critical condition who had to have an endotracheal tube.
The common characteristic of the patients is that they work outdoors for a long time, then have symptoms of fatigue, muscle contractions all over the body, convulsions in the limbs... After being admitted to the hospital for emergency care, hydration, electrolytes and cooling the body, most patients are stable, continue to be monitored and treated.
The most seriously injured person was a 65-year-old NTH patient, residing in Huong Lung commune (Cam Khe, Phu Tho). The patient's family said: the patient went to the field to work from 9am, and at around 11am, people discovered the patient lying unconscious in the field, so they quickly took him to the hospital for emergency care.
At the time of admission, the patient was in a coma, had a weak anorectomy, wheezing, had a fever of 39.5 degrees Celsius, had red skin, sweating, a rapid heartbeat, and blood pressure dropped to 80/50mmHg. Immediately, the patient was placed with an endotracheal tube, mechanical ventilation, body cooling, hydration, electrolytes and intensive resuscitation. After 5 hours of continuous resuscitation, the physical disorder was controlled, organ function improved, vital signs were stable, the family asked to be transferred to higher treatment.
Doctor Nguyen Thanh Thuy - Deputy Head of the Emergency - Intensive Care - Artificial kidney Department - said: When working in a hot environment, the body will react by increasing sweating to cool the body, causing the body to lose water and electrolytes, if not compensated promptly, it will lead to reduced circulation volume causing cardiovascular congestion, severe electrolyte disorders that can cause death. Another risk factor when body temperature increases will cause dysfunctional disorders in many organs such as the heart, respiratory, nerve, etc.
Therefore, to prevent heat and sugar, people should not work too long outdoors in the sun or in hot environments, avoid over-exercising physical activities, especially in hot weather. Drink enough water when it is hot or laboring. Always equip yourself with full sun protection equipment when working or working outdoors in the sun such as protective clothing, hats, hats, glasses, etc. Coming to the working environment, especially workshops and basements, is very meaningful in preventing heat and fever.
