Quang Tri - A foreign object deep in the nasal cavity, suspected to have existed since childhood, caused a 58-year-old man to relapse sinusitis for many years.

On August 7, Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital said that doctors of the Otolaryngology Department had just successfully performed endoscopic surgery to remove a foreign object that had existed for a long time in the nasal cavity of a 58-year-old male patient.

The patient was hospitalized due to prolonged nasal congestion, headache, and a side of the nose frequently oozing pus with a foul odor. Previously, the patient had been treated for sinusitis many times, but the condition only temporarily improved and then recurred.

Through endoscopy and computed tomography, doctors discovered a foreign object deep in the nasal cavity, causing obstruction of the airway and chronic sinusitis.

Specialist Doctor II Dinh Viet Thanh - Head of the Otolaryngology Department - said that the foreign object may have existed since the patient was young. This could be a stone or gravel inserted into the nose from childhood but not detected.

After many years, the foreign object clung tightly to the surrounding tissue, the surface solidified, creating a coral-like shape. The inflammation has also affected the sinuses, making treatment more complicated.

On the morning of August 7, the anesthesia team performed endoscopic surgery to remove the foreign object, and at the same time treated sinusitis and cleaned the damaged area. After surgery, the patient was awake, breathing clearly, his health was stable and continued to be monitored at the hospital.
