The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee will submit to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council the investment policy for the dredging and environmental improvement project combined with urban beautification and drainage of Ba Lon canal at the 4th session (special session), scheduled to take place at the end of September 2025.
The project has a total investment of more than VND 9,228 billion from the city budget, the implementation period is in the period of 2026 - 2030.
The scope of implementation is located in Binh Dong ward (formerly District 8) and Binh Hung commune (formerly Binh Chanh district).
According to the compensation and site clearance plan, the project will reclaim land from 378 households. Of which, 283 households must be cleared, the remaining 95 households are partially affected.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board, the Ba Lon canal is dredged, embanked and renovated with a length of about 7.4 km.
At the same time, the project will form traffic routes according to the plan, complete the technical infrastructure system and build a new Ba Lon 2 bridge across National Highway 50.
The Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board said that the project aims to solve the drainage needs for an area of about 920 hectares. At the same time, dredging and building embankments on both sides of the canal to limit landslides, improve the water environment and contribute to urban beautification.
The project also supports rainwater drainage for the project "Solving flooding caused by tides in Ho Chi Minh City area considering climate change factors - phase 1" (total capital of nearly 10,000 billion VND) to reduce flooding in the city center.
In addition, the project will ensure conditions for waterway traffic on Ba Lon canal according to the standards of a level VI inland waterway.
Along with Ba Lon canal, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee will submit to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council the investment policy for the Ong Be canal renovation project (total investment capital of more than VND 7,434 billion) at the end of September meeting.
To implement the Ong Be canal renovation project, Ho Chi Minh City will reclaim land from 1,425 households in Chanh Hung ward, of which 1,224 households were completely cleared and 201 households were partially cleared.
Currently, the whole of Ho Chi Minh City still has nearly 40,000 houses built on and along canals, of which District 8 previously accounted for the largest number.
Ho Chi Minh City has approved a project to renovate urban areas in residential areas above and along canals and ditches in District 8 with the goal of relocating nearly 15,000 households.
