Ho Chi Minh City reclaims land from 1,425 households in Chanh Hung ward (formerly District 8), of which 1,224 households were cleared to renovate Ong Be canal with a total capital of more than VND 7,434 billion.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee will submit to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council the investment policy for the Ong Be canal renovation project (formerly Chanh Hung ward - District 8 and formerly Binh Hung commune - Binh Chanh district) at the 4th session at the end of September 2025.

If approved, the project is expected to be implemented in the 2025 - 2030 period, with a total investment of more than VND 7,434 billion.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board, the project includes dredging the Ong Be canal about 4.2 km long; building a 5.6 km long embankment protection system; and forming a new road according to the plan, 12 - 16 m wide, more than 2.4 km long.

Along the embankment, synchronous technical infrastructure such as sidewalks, railings, drainage systems, up and down wharves, trees and lighting will be invested in.

To implement the project, Ho Chi Minh City will reclaim land from 1,425 households in Chanh Hung ward, of which 1,224 households were completely cleared and 201 households were partially cleared.

The goal of the project is to drain water, reduce flooding for an area of 470 hectares, while improving the environment, beautifying urban areas along canals, creating ecological space and momentum for socio-economic development in the South of Ho Chi Minh City.

In addition, the project also plays a role in supporting drainage for the Doi Canal and coordinating with the project "Solving flooding caused by tides in Ho Chi Minh City area taking into account climate change factors - phase 1" (total capital of nearly 10,000 billion VND) to reduce flooding in the city center.

Currently, the whole of Ho Chi Minh City still has nearly 40,000 houses built on and along canals, of which District 8 previously accounted for the largest number.

In addition to projects preparing to be implemented such as Ong Be canal, projects being implemented such as renovating the North bank of Doi canal and Xom Coi canal, Ho Chi Minh City has approved the Urban Renovation Project for housing areas above and along canals in District 8 with the previous goal of relocating nearly 15,000 households.

According to the project, along with the construction of resettlement areas, social housing, and renovation of old apartments, the city will dredge about 36.5 km of canals, build embankments, develop green areas and public spaces.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, urban beautification associated with canal renovation not only improves the living environment, reduces flooding but also creates space for land development, effectively exploits urban space after relocation, towards building a civilized, modern, and livable city.
