Bruno Guimaraes and the survival problem with Newcastle

Bruno Guimaraes' future may decide Newcastle's direction in the new season and long-term projects.

The summer of 2026 is becoming one of the most disappointing transfer windows in Newcastle United's history. After the departure of coach Eddie Howe and a series of force changes, the St James' Park team continues to face the risk of losing captain Bruno Guimaraes, Arsenal's top target.

Although Bruno Guimaraes has joined Newcastle to prepare for the new season, negotiations related to the future of the Brazilian midfielder have not yet closed. If the deal becomes a reality, this will be a strong blow to Newcastle's ambition under new coach Matthias Jaissle.

Unlike many failed transfer windows due to ineffective purchases, Newcastle's problem this summer lies in the opposite direction. "The Magpies" are witnessing the departure of many important factors, causing the foundation that once helped them compete with the "Big Six" to gradually break down.

The current difficulties originate from last summer, when Newcastle lost Alexander Isak to Liverpool on the last day of the transfer window. The departure of the key striker led to a disappointing season, causing them not to win tickets to European cups and facing great financial pressure.

To balance the budget, Newcastle was forced to sell Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for about £70 million. Later, Sandro Tonali also joined Tottenham in a record deal worth £100 million. Although these two deals brought in significant revenue, they also significantly reduced the squad strength.

If Bruno Guimaraes continues to leave St James' Park, Newcastle will lose the most important link in midfield. The Brazilian midfielder and Tonali once created one of the highest rated central midfield pairs in the Premier League, which is the foundation to help the team compete fairly with the "big guys".

Not only affecting expertise, continuously letting stars leave also raises questions about the ambition of the project backed by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF). Newcastle was once expected to become a new force in English football, but having to sell key players gradually faded that image.

Newcastle's board of directors still affirms that Bruno Guimaraes is not for sale. However, the fact that the Brazilian midfielder is said to want to join Arsenal makes the situation more complicated. A team that owns many players who are no longer wholeheartedly dedicated will find it very difficult to maintain stability throughout the season.

In the opposite direction, Newcastle also faced difficulties in the transfer market. A series of targets such as James Trafford, Marc Guehi, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro or Bryan Mbeumo all chose to join other opponents in the Premier League instead of moving to St James' Park.

Magpies" still spend more than 100 million pounds to add names like Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur, but these contracts are not enough to soothe fans' worries compared to stars who have left or may leave.

Matthias Jaissle is therefore taking over a Newcastle that is completely different from the team Eddie Howe once built. The challenge for the German strategist is not only to create a new playing style, but also to maintain confidence in the dressing room and persuade key players to continue to stick with it.

Less than 2 years ago, Newcastle was still considered a candidate strong enough to compete with the top teams in England. Even, the club's board of directors once set a goal to become one of the strongest teams in the world by 2030. However, if it cannot keep Bruno Guimaraes and soon stabilize the force, that ambition will become increasingly distant.
