The Premier League will have the top 5 teams qualifying for the Champions League next season. The race is currently very exciting and unpredictable as the teams ranked from 3rd to 7th place are only 4 points behind each other.
Newcastle have now secured a place in the UEFA Conference League after winning the English League Cup. Liverpool are also certain to qualify for next season's Champions League because their worst record is 3rd.
At least 5 teams participate in the Champions League
Thanks to the achievements of English clubs in UEFA tournaments this season, the Premier League has 5 places to participate in the Champions League.
English football could have six representatives if Man United or Tottenham win the Europa League (these two teams certainly cannot break into the top five of the Premier League).
According to theory, the team is ranked 6th in the Premier League and the FA Cup champion will participate in the Europa League.
Other ways to participate in the Champions League
In addition to considering the Premier League rankings, teams can find tickets to the top European tournament by winning the Champions League and Europa League this season. Similarly, the Conference League champions will win a place in next year's Europa League.
If the FA Cup winner qualifies for the Champions League or Europa League through a Premier League position, the Europa League (from the FA Cup) spot will be transferred to the team with the highest achievement but not yet eligible to participate in UEFA tournaments.
Similarly, if the English League Cup champions qualify for the Champions League or Europa League through a top-placed finish, or by winning the FA Cup, their place in the Conference League will be for the Premier League team with the second highest record but not eligible for the European Cup.
The possibility of 10 English teams participating in the FA Cup?
The three teams attending the FA Cup semi -finals are Nottingham Forest, Man City and Villa are both in the race to win the Champions League through the Premier League. If any of these clubs are in the top and win the FA Cup title, their Europa League will be transferred to the team with the second best achievement but not eligible to attend the European Cup.
If Crystal Palace win the FA Cup and are still out of the top 5, they will qualify for the Europa League.
More interestingly, if the following conditions are met, English football will have up to 10 clubs participating in the European Cup next season:
- Liverpool, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and Man City are in the top 4 and are eligible to participate in the Champions League.
- Aston Villa or Brighton are 6th and are eligible to participate in the Europa League.
- Bournemouth are 7th and have a ticket to the Conference League because the English League Cup champions (New Newcastle) will participate in the Champions League.
- Chelsea are 8th and qualify for the Europa League by winning the Conference League this season.
- Crystal Palace are 10th and qualify for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup.
- Man United or Tottenham qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League this season.
