Overview
After the defeats in the opening matches, Curacao and Ecuador both entered the confrontation at Kansas City with the sole goal of winning to nurture hopes of advancing at the 2026 World Cup.
Curacao had a memorable World Cup debut when Livano Comenencia scored the first goal in the team's history at the biggest football festival on the planet. However, that joy was quickly overshadowed by a heavy 1-7 defeat to Germany.
The CONCACAF representative became the second team in history to concede at least 7 goals in the World Cup opening match, after South Korea at the 1954 tournament. However, coach Dick Advocaat still believes his players can create surprises in the remaining matches.
The Dutch strategist affirmed that Curacao still has the opportunity to turn the first World Cup in history into a memorable experience. However, if they continue to fail and Ivory Coast does not lose to Germany in the same group match, Curacao will be officially eliminated.
The hopes of the Caribbean team continue to be placed on Livano Comenencia. If he scores against Ecuador, this midfielder will become the third player in the history of a CONCACAF team to score in the first 2 World Cup matches, after Bert Patenaude of the USA (1930) and Hector Socorro of Cuba (1938).
On the other side, Ecuador also suffered no less pressure after a bitter 0-1 defeat to Ivory Coast due to Amad Diallo's goal in the final minutes.
That was the first defeat of the South American team after a 20-match unbeaten streak in all competitions, lasting from September 2024. At the same time, Ecuador also extended their 3-match winless streak at the World Cup, their worst record in the history of the tournament.
Unfortunately, Ecuador had no shortage of opportunities to achieve a better result. Alan Minda, Enner Valencia and John Yeboah all hit the woodwork before receiving a fatal blow at the end of the match.
With still having to face Germany in the final round, coach Sebastian Beccacece's team understands that this is almost a must-win match if they want to maintain hope of passing the group stage.
In theory, Ecuador is rated higher thanks to possessing a quality squad and a highly combative midfield with Moises Caicedo and Willian Pacho. The ball control ability of the South American team promises to be key against a Curacao that is likely to choose a defensive counter-attacking style of play.
Both teams have not recorded any new injuries and will have the strongest force for a vital match in Group E.
Head-to-head record
This will be the first time Ecuador and Curacao have faced each other in history, bringing a completely new confrontation at the 2026 World Cup.
Although they have never met Curacao, Ecuador has a very impressive record against representatives of the CONCACAF region. Since the 2-3 defeat to Mexico in June 2019, La Tri has gone through 13 consecutive unbeaten matches against opponents in this region in all competitions, with a record of 7 wins and 6 draws.
Score prediction: Ecuador 2-0 Curacao
The match between Ecuador and Curacao takes place at 7:00 a.m. on June 21 (Vietnam time).
