According to British media, President Gianni Infantino is likely to be asked to resign at an extraordinary FIFA Council meeting.
FIFA originally planned to hold this meeting before Infantino's controversial £15 billion plan was exposed. Initially, members of the FIFA Council wanted to conduct an independent assessment of the unprecedented decision related to the cancellation of the red card of US national team striker Folarin Balogun at the 2026 World Cup.
However, the nature of the meeting is said to have changed significantly after the scandal related to the "World Cup sale" plan broke out. The controversy weakened Infantino's position and increased the possibility that he would face a vote of no confidence.
European media commented that the extraordinary meeting could become a direct challenge to the FIFA President's seat. Many football leaders and politicians also called on Infantino to proactively resign before the risk of being impeached becomes a reality.
UEFA reacted strongly, saying that the unclear preparation of the agreement had caused the organization to lose faith in Infantino. CONCACAF also criticized, saying that the FIFA President no longer puts football interests first and proposed to conduct a comprehensive assessment of his term.
The pressure also comes from La Liga President Javier Tebas. He declared "Infantino's time is over" and said that world football needs a new leadership apparatus.
