The English Football Association (FA) confirmed that coach Gareth Southgate will resign after the defeat in the EURO 2024 final. This 53-year-old coach has directed 102 matches of the Three Lions.
Southgate's contract is only tied until the end of December, after previously signing a contract extension in 2021. His last match as England head coach was in the EURO final 2024.
His assistant Steve Holland will also leave the team. The federation is in the process of finding and appointing a new team.
An official statement read: "After 102 matches and almost eight years in charge, Gareth Southgate has announced he will step down as coach of the Three Lions."
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham added: "On behalf of the Football Association, I would like to express my gratitude to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland for all they have achieved. Over the past eight years, they transformed the England team, bringing unforgettable memories to all who love the Three Lions. We will look back on Gareth's tenure with great pride.
The process to appoint Gareth's successor is currently underway and we aim to announce a new captain as soon as possible. The UEFA Nations League will start in September and we will have a temporary solution if needed. We know there will be inevitable speculation, but we will not make further comments on the appointment process."
It is still unknown who will replace Southgate on the England team's bench, but there are a few prominent names mentioned such as Eddie Howe, Lee Carsley, Graham Potter... Jurgen Klopp is probably the reasonable choice. But he is currently resting.
