Overview
Under the leadership of Hugo Broos, the South African national team has transformed from an unstable team and frequently absent from major tournaments to a team continuously participating in three important tournaments: CAN 2023, CAN 2025 and this year's World Cup.
The Belgian coach was appointed in 2021, in the context that South Africa had been unable to qualify for the World Cup for more than a decade. If not counting the 2010 tournament hosting as host, they only passed the qualifiers once, in 2002.
The journey to this World Cup is also full of storms. South Africa once defeated Lesotho 2-0, but was later defeated for using Teboho Mokoena while this midfielder was suspended. The penalty caused them to lose 3 points and have to wait until the last match to officially overcome Nigeria with a close gap to win the top spot in the group.
It was a wonderful journey with so many emotions, where we had to rely on each other to overcome difficulties" - South African captain Ronwen Williams said after winning a ticket to the World Cup.
Being in the same group as Mexico, South Korea and the Czech Republic, South Africa's chances of surpassing the World Cup group stage for the first time are not highly rated. However, Hugo Broos still believes that this will be a valuable opportunity for the team to mature.
That will be a great experience for our team. We need to play against such opponents to learn. And in football, anything can happen. We will fight as we have done for many years" - the South African captain said.
The South African squad is currently mainly composed of players playing domestically. The two most prominent names in attack are Relebohile Mofoxeng and Oswin Appollis. With the current quality of personnel, fast counter-attacks are likely to continue to be their most important weapon.
Coach
Hugo Broos was once a famous Belgian football defender with an 18-year career in Anderlecht and Club Brugge colors. After retiring in 1988, he entered coaching and worked in Belgium, Greece as well as Turkey.
Broos began his career at the national team level when he led Cameroon to win the CAN 2017 championship. 4 years later, he took over South Africa and quickly made a big change.
From playing in stadiums with few spectators, South Africa now regularly attracts a large number of fans every time they go to the stadium.
Fans have loved the team again and they came to the stadium to cheer for us" - Broos shared.
Star
The South African national team under Hugo Broos does not depend on a single individual. This is a team built on discipline and team spirit. However, Teboho Mokoena is still considered the most important link in midfield.
The midfielder belonging to the Mamelodi Sundowns squad brings balance between defense and attack, and is also an expert in handling set pieces of the national team. Mokoena's experience, ability to compete and regulate pace helps South Africa maintain a stable tactical structure in many major matches.
Besides him, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and defender Khuliso Mudau are also important pillars in Hugo Broos's system.
Notable faces
Relebohile Mofoxeng is currently one of South Africa's most loved young talents, especially in Orlando Pirates' colors. However, the 21-year-old player has not yet fully shown his potential when joining the national team.
The World Cup is considered a big stage for Mobokeng to assert himself. Hugo Broos also hinted at the possibility of giving him a more important role at this year's tournament.
Mobokeng possesses outstanding personal technique, the ability to create breakthroughs, score goals and assist. What is missing from this young player is only the bravery to shine on the biggest stage.
The silent hero
Lyle Foster may not be the most prominent face in South Africa, but the role of the Burnley striker is extremely important to the team's tactical system.
Foster not only contributes to scoring ability but also stands out in his wall skills, aerial duels and holding the ball to create space for teammates. Even when not directly contributing to goals, his presence still helps the attack operate much more effectively.
That is the type of player who does not often appear on the front page, but always silently creates a difference for the team.
