Manchester United has decided to sack coach Ruben Amorim. According to British media, the Portuguese captain was informed of this decision right after the 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
The main reason leading to M.U terminating the contract with Amorim stems from the broken relationship between him and the board of directors. Especially after the public statements criticizing the upper class of the 40-year-old coach.
At the press conference after the Leeds draw, Amorim emphasized that he came to Old Trafford to be a "manager" rather than a "head coach". He also implicitly blamed Football Director Jason Wilcox and the scout department for lacking support in the transfer market.
Amorim was appointed by Man United in November 2024 from Sporting CP to replace Erik ten Hag. In 14 months of leadership, he coached 47 matches in the Premier League but only won 15, equivalent to a rate of 31%.
Currently, Man United is 6th in the Premier League standings after 20 rounds, but has only won 1 in the last 5 matches. Darren Fletcher, former midfielder of the club and currently head coach of the U18 team, is expected to be assigned a temporary task.
Fletcher used to be a first-team assistant under Amorim and has worked in the coaching staff since 2020. The decision to appoint him interim was approved by a high-level leadership group, including CEO Omar Berrada and Football Director Jason Wilcox.
Previously, despite existing tensions related to the January transfer plan and the 3-4-3 tactical operation, the board of directors remained patient with Amorim. However, the statements in recent days were seen as "the last straw", pushing M.U to make a change on the coaching bench.
