Tottenham suffered a 0-3 defeat to Brentford in the Premier League 2026-2027 opening match, exposing a large gap between ambition after a bustling transfer window and actual performance.
Brentford does not have a squad of expensive stars like Tottenham, but the home team operates smoothly, is energetic and capable of causing difficulties for the opponent. At Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford overwhelmed Spurs from the beginning and almost decided the match after only 50 minutes.
Tottenham entered the game with a series of problems. They did not control the midfield area, had difficulty deploying the ball from the lower line and were constantly pushed into a position where they had to pass long. Spurs took 22 minutes to organize significant combinations in midfield, while they were already behind 0-1.
Brentford played at high speed, proactively pushing the squad up and putting pressure right from Tottenham's half. When goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky tried to deploy short passes, the home team often pushed up to 5 players to approach. Spurs therefore could not play in the way De Zerbi wanted and continuously lost control.
What is more noteworthy is the way Brentford operates. They play exactly what De Zerbi wants Tottenham to aim for: fast ball rotation, continuous movement and exploiting space behind the midfield. Keane Lewis-Potter and Mathias Jensen often swap positions, while Michael Kayode boldly pushes up to find opportunities to face the goalkeeper.
Mamadou Sangare, Brentford's only new signing to start, also left his mark right in his debut match. He often retreated to support his teammates and then immediately moved forward. Sangare's one-touch combination right in front of the penalty area opened the situation leading to the first goal.
On the opposite side, Tottenham played disjointedly. Force changes after a summer of heavy spending further made De Zerbi's team lack connection. They are in the process of assembling a new squad and 90 minutes at Brentford clearly revealed the disparity between links.

Tottenham is missing Micky van de Ven due to injury, while Pedro Porro has not returned after the 2026 World Cup. Mateus Fernandes, a £85 million contract, is only on the bench due to a calf problem.
However, those personnel shortages are not enough to explain Spurs' poor performance. Tottenham has invested heavily to build a deep squad, reducing dependence on a few key players. Van de Ven's absence is a loss, but Marcos Senesi once played prominently as a left midfielder in the Premier League last season. Spurs still have enough personnel to perform better.
Sandro Tonali, one of the biggest deals of the summer, also did not create the necessary influence in midfield. Lucas Bergvall and his teammates could not help Tottenham escape passivity.
By the 50th minute, Brentford was leading 3-0 and completely controlled the game. The home team even had a chance to increase the gap when Igor Thiago was awarded a penalty, but this striker shot the ball against the post. The miss did not cool down the atmosphere in the stands, because Brentford created too big a gap.
De Zerbi can remind his players that this is only the first match of the season. The 2026 World Cup also caused many players to return late, affecting the preparation and formation process. However, the 0-3 defeat to Brentford is still a clear warning for Tottenham.
Tottenham has invested a lot to change the face of the team after two consecutive seasons in 17th place. Their goal is not only to avoid the relegation race but also to aim for a position high enough to return to the European arena.
