Man City spends record money in winter transfer window

Premier League clubs spent £370m in the last transfer window, with Man City alone spending almost as much as the other 19 teams combined.

According to Football Transfers, Man City spent 180 million pounds ($223 million) to bring new players to Etihad Stadium in the last transfer window.

This is the second highest spending in a Premier League winter transfer window. The record belongs to Chelsea with 275 million pounds ($341 million) in 2023.

Statistics show that the 20 Premier League teams spent $124 million more than in the 2024 winter transfer window, but still far less than the $1 billion that teams spent in 2023.

The club has not spent that much in a single transfer window since the summer of 2017 when Man City spent $279 million.

Pep Guardiola's side have made a strong move to revive their form after an unsuccessful first half of the season.

They dropped to fifth in the Premier League table and only qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stage after the final round of matches.

To improve performance and form, Man City brought in Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt for a transfer fee of 59 million pounds, followed by Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for 29.6 million pounds and Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens for 33.6 million pounds.

Before the winter transfer window closed, Man City recruited central midfielder Nico Gonzales from FC Porto for £50 million, equivalent to the player's contract release clause.

Unlike the Premier League, LaLiga had a fairly quiet transfer window with just 25.13 million Euros spent, according to Transfermarkt.

Real Betis made their biggest LaLiga signing of the deadline day when they signed Colombian striker "Cucho" Hernandez from MLS club Columbus Crew for €13 million.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are among the Spanish clubs that have not added new players in this transfer window.

LaLiga's strict Financial Fair Play regulations and the inability to compete with Premier League clubs are among the reasons Spanish clubs have opted for austerity measures.
