According to AFP, Sara Duterte's legal team said they would take all legal measures to protect her rights.
Ms. Duterte was prosecuted last month for "serious threats", related to a statement at a press conference last night. Accordingly, she declared that she had hired people to assassinate President Marcos, his wife and a former congressman if she had been murdered first.
Philippine Ministry of Justice spokesman Polo Martinez confirmed that the arrest warrant was issued after a court in Quezon city, Metro Manila region, rejected the request to postpone the issuance of the warrant.
However, the arrest warrant is considered difficult to lead to Ms. Duterte being detained, as lawyers can apply for bail and continue to appeal to higher courts.
According to Philippine law, if convicted, she could face a maximum of 6 months in prison. The assassination threat is also an important content in the impeachment of Ms. Duterte in the Senate.
Ms. Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives in May on charges including corruption and illicit profits. If convicted, she will be dismissed and banned from politics, thereby ending her plan to run for President of the Philippines in 2028.
