Manchester United could not take advantage of the opportunity against a Newcastle United that was unstable and lacked many key players due to injury. They even suffered a bitter defeat when they let the opponent score the decisive goal in the 90th minute, in a match played with more men.
This is also the match that ended coach Michael Carrick's unbeaten streak in the worst possible way. However, Man United still temporarily holds third place in the Premier League table because Aston Villa also lost to Chelsea in this round.
However, the race for a Champions League spot became tense when the gap between the third and sixth-placed teams was only 3 points.
Entering the match, Newcastle faced a lot of pressure when they only won one of the last 7 rounds. However, before the enthusiastic cheers at St James' Park, Eddie Howe's team entered the game full of energy. Kieran Trippier almost opened the score with a cross that hit the post, while Lewis Hall and Harvey Barnes also missed regrettable opportunities.
On the other side, Man United gradually regained control of the game towards the end of the first half with dangerous shots from Kobbie Mainoo, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, but all failed to beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Drama exploded at the end of the first half when Jacob Ramsey was sent off after a second yellow card. However, Newcastle still unexpectedly took the lead when Bruno Fernandes fouled Anthony Gordon in the penalty area. Gordon himself successfully converted a penalty to open the score, before Casemiro headed in to equalize 1-1 right before halftime.
Stepping into the second half, despite playing with one less player, Newcastle still defended resiliently. Ramsdale continuously made excellent saves against the finishes of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee.
When the match seemed to close in a draw, William Osula suddenly shined with a dribbling move from the right wing and then a beautiful curling shot into the far corner, sealing an emotional 2-1 victory for Newcastle.
This is also the fourth consecutive time Man United has suffered a defeat against the "Magpies" when playing away at St James' Park.
