Overview
Newcastle are aiming to win away to Leeds - a team that is trying to recover after a challenging week.
The Magpies opened the season with a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa before losing 2-3 to Liverpool. This result means Eddie Howe's team have lost 3 of their last 4 Premier League matches (D 1), more than the total number of losses in the previous 11 matches (W8 D1 L2).
Their longest recent winless streak has been in five games, in September and October 2024.
However, Newcastle are on an eight-match winning streak against new Premier League players, scoring at least three goals in seven games. The last time they had a more impressive record was between December 1994 and October 1996 (9 games).
Harvey Barnes continues to be expected to maintain his scoring streak against Leeds. The winger has scored five goals in six Premier League meetings with Leeds, having scored in five consecutive games for Leicester between 2020 and 2022. In 2020-21 to 2022-2023, only Mohamed Salah (6) and Bruno Fernandes (6) have scored more goals against Leeds than Barnes.
As for Leeds, after starting with a 1-0 victory over Everton, they suffered a heavy 0-5 defeat to Arsenal and were then eliminated from the Carabao Cup when they lost to Sheffield Wednesday on penalties.
However, coach Daniel Farke has a relatively good record against Newcastle. This is one of two Premier League teams he has faced more than once but has not lost (won 1, drew 1), along with Bournemouth.
Notably, Bournemouth at that time were led by Eddie Howe himself (2019-2020), making him one of two coaches that Farke was unbeaten against twice or more, along with Steve Bruce.
Leeds are also in impressive form at home with a 24-match unbeaten streak in the domestic league (won 18, drew 3) - the best record under Farke. The last time they had a longer streak was in 25 games between January 2009 and January 2010 in League One. In the top flight, their most recent record was 31 games between May 1991 and November 1992.
The win over Everton opens up the opportunity for Leeds to have their first two consecutive home Premier League wins since August 2022. If they keep both games clean, it will be their first time since February 2021.
New signing Aaron Stach has quickly become a highlight for Leeds this season. He created 7 scoring opportunities in the Premier League 2025-2026 - the most in the team. Stach was also directly involved in 11/24 shots of Leeds, including 4 shots on target (accounting for 46%).
Personnel situation
Anthony Gordon's red card against Liverpool means he will be absent due to suspension. This is a big loss for Newcastle, especially when the English player is leading the number of shots in the Premier League this season (10 times).
The possibility of Sandro Tonali and Joelinton starting is still uncertain after both had to leave the field in the match against The Kop. Meanwhile, Fabian Schar is certain to be absent as he has to comply with Premier League regulations on head injuries.
On the opposite side, Farke also faces a personnel problem when Leeds' midfield lost Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka due to injury. This means Sean Longstaff is likely to start and reunite with his former team.
Head-to-head record
In fact, Leeds often play well against Newcastle. They have lost just one of their last six Premier League meetings with the Magpies. That was a 0-1 defeat in January 2022.
However, Newcastle has a special fate at Elland Road. "The Magpies" have won 7/14 away matches at this stadium (5% rate). This is their highest tally against any opponent in the history of the competition, playing away from home for 10 or more games.
Expected lineup:
Leeds United: Lucas Perri, Jayden Bogle, Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Anton Stach, Ilia Gruev, Sean Longstaff, Daniel James, Wilfried Gnontoe, Joel Piroe.
Newcastle: Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Malick Thiaw, Dan Burn, Tino Livramento, Bruno Guimaraes, Joe Willock, Jacob Ramsey, Anthony Elanga, William Osula, Harvey Barnes.
The match between Leeds United and Newcastle takes place at 11:30 p.m. on August 30 (Vietnam time).
