Manager Pep Guardiola has agreed a new one-year contract with Manchester City, ending speculation over his future.
The Spaniard's current contract at the Etihad expires at the end of the season, and there have been reports that Guardiola could leave at the end of the 2024-25 campaign. Guardiola was linked with the England job before Thomas Tuchel was appointed to replace Gareth Southgate.
However, Guardiola will now remain in charge of Man City until at least the end of next season after agreeing new terms with the club. An official announcement is expected in the coming days.
The Spaniard joined City in 2016 after three seasons as Bayern Munich manager, overseeing the most successful period in the club's history, fuelled by funding from billionaire Sheikh Mansour.
Guardiola has led the Citizens to six Premier League titles, including four in a row. He has also won two FA Cups, four Carabao Cups and a Champions League. Next season will be his 10th campaign at the Etihad.
Man City are on their worst losing streak of Guardiola's entire tenure, having lost their last four games in all competitions and are five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
After the defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, Guardiola said: "More than ever, I want to improve the team and bring them back to the highest level." He also laughed off speculation about the job with the Brazilian national team.
Man City have struggled without Rodri, who is out for the rest of the season after picking up an injury against Arsenal. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has been a key player and has contributed greatly to Guardiola's successful era at the Etihad.
One of the key factors that has motivated Guardiola to stay at Man City is said to be the fierce competition in the Premier League. Teams such as Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are all challenging Man City's dominance.
The special relationship between Guardiola and colleagues such as Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca also adds to the appeal of the Premier League.
In fact, Guardiola still holds ambitions to lead a national team at the World Cup, with the possibility of making this a reality in 2026. And the new contract with Man City will not hinder Guardiola's plans.
