The Premier League 2026-2027 witnessed a major change on the coaching bench when 9/20 clubs started the season with a new coach. This is the highest number since the 1946-1947 season, according to data from Opta.
Marco Rose, Xabi Alonso, Pierre Sage, Alvaro Arbeloa, Gary O'Neil, Andoni Iraola, Enzo Maresca, Matthias Jaissle and Oliver Glasner all for the first time led new teams in the Premier League in the opening round.
The fluctuation also appears in the group of big teams. 3 of the top 6 clubs in the league have new coaches in the summer. Manchester United and Tottenham are also being led by new coaches appointed from mid-last season.

Mikel Arteta is a special case. The Arsenal coach currently has the longest term in the Premier League, with 2,432 days as of August 19. 8. Arsenal is also the club with the lowest frequency of coach changes since the Premier League was born, averaging only 0.23 changes per year.
The stability of the "Gunners" is clearly contrasting with the general trend of the league. As of the 2026-2027 season, the average time a coach holds power in 20 clubs is only 474 days, the lowest level in Premier League history.
If only counting completed terms, the average time in the last 5 seasons is 1.9 years. This shows that clubs are increasingly tending to change coaches in a shorter time.
The age of coaches also reflects the change of generations. The average age of Premier League coaches this season is 47.1, the lowest in the past 20 years. This number is only less than 2 years higher than the lowest level in league history, recorded at the beginning of the 1993-1994 season.
Arteta, 44 years old, is in the group of young coaches of the league but has worked for a long time at Arsenal. This is a special combination between a new generation coach and a highly stable environment.

In the opposite direction, West Brom, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Leicester City and Southampton are in the group of clubs with the highest frequency of coach changes among teams that have played at least 10 seasons in the Premier League.
The widespread change makes the 2026-2027 Premier League a particularly unpredictable season. Many teams have to get used to the new philosophy, while new coaches also need time to build the squad and apply tactical systems.
In that context, the advantage may belong to clubs that maintain personnel and tactical stability. Arteta's Arsenal is the clearest example when the Spanish coach has spent many years building the team in a consistent direction.
The new season is therefore not only a race between players on the field but also a competition between different coaching philosophies. With 9 new coaches appearing right in the opening round, the 2026-2027 Premier League may witness many fluctuations in the standings before teams find stability.
