Before the ASEAN Cup 2026 kicked off, FIFA announced the latest rankings of national teams. Among the 10 teams participating in the tournament, Thailand and Vietnam continue to be the two teams with the highest rankings.
Accordingly, the Thai national team is currently ranked 94th in the world with 1,250.80 points, and also ranked 15th in Asia. The Vietnamese national team holds the 99th position in the world with 1,227.20 points and ranks 17th in Asia. Coach Kim Sang-sik's team is the only team in Southeast Asia to get bonus points in July after a 4-0 victory over Myanmar in an international friendly match.
Indonesia is the team ranked right after Vietnam in the region when ranked 118th in the world, owning 1,157.14 points and ranked 21st in Asia. This is also one of the candidates directly competing with the Vietnamese team in Group A - ASEAN Cup 2026.

The gap in the FIFA rankings between the top 3 teams and the rest of Southeast Asia is quite clear. The Philippines team is currently ranked 135th in the world, Malaysia ranked 136th, Singapore held 148th, Myanmar ranked 158th, Cambodia ranked 175th, Laos ranked 185th, while Timor Leste ranked 201st.
Although the ASEAN Cup has been recognized by FIFA as a level 1 A-class international tournament, the tournament still does not take place in the FIFA Days schedule. Therefore, matches are only counted with the lowest coefficient in FIFA's scoring formula.
According to the current calculation method, if they successfully defend the ASEAN Cup championship, the Vietnamese team will be added about 6 points after the entire competition journey.
