The Malaysian national team entered the semi-finals of the ASEAN Cup 2026 with a weakened squad. After the FIFA and AFC sanctions related to 7 illegally naturalized players, the team only has 7 players who participated in the 1-3 defeat to Vietnam in March.
Difficulties continue to surround Malaysia as many players are injured, while Wan Kuzain has to return to the US to join the club. Coach Tan Cheng Hoe admitted that the team is having serious problems in midfield. Malaysia's hopes are placed on Pavithran Gunalan and Sergio Aguero.
Meanwhile, the Vietnamese team has a basis for confidence when scoring 13 goals in the group stage. However, coach Kim Sang-sik still has to solve the personnel and finishing efficiency problem. Vietnam launched 74 shots but only 24 were on target, with a chance conversion rate of 57.6%, lower than Thailand and Indonesia.
Semi-final history does not completely support Vietnam when they have been defeated by Malaysia twice. Therefore, Quang Hai and his teammates need to take advantage of their force to create favorable results right on the away field, thereby reducing pressure before the second leg.
The ASEAN Cup 2026 semi-final first leg between Malaysia and Vietnam takes place at 8:00 p.m. on August 16.
