The Vietnamese team completed the task of defending the ASEAN Cup championship after defeating Thailand with a total score of 4-2. The team won 2-0 in the first leg at Rajamangala before drawing 2-2 in the second leg at My Dinh Stadium.
This title helps coach Kim Sang-sik become the first coach to help the Vietnamese team win against Thailand in the two ASEAN Cup finals, and also win the tournament for two consecutive tournaments.
The team's journey began with an undefeated record in the group stage. Quang Hai and his teammates won 7-0 against Timor-Leste, 3-0 from Indonesia, 3-1 from Cambodia and drew 0-0 with Singapore.
In the semi-finals, Vietnam continued to overcome Malaysia with two wins with the same score of 2-0, before defeating Thailand in the final.
After 8 matches, Vietnam did not lose to any opponent and won the 4th title in ASEAN Cup history, thereby equaling the achievement with Singapore. Thailand is still leading with 7 championships.
The Vietnamese team finished the tournament with 20 goals, becoming the team with the most effective attack in ASEAN Cup 2026. This is also the first time the team has won the championship with the best scoring record in the tournament.
In the opposite direction, Le Giang Patrik conceded 3 goals. This achievement cannot surpass Singapore's record of 2 goals conceded at the 1998 ASEAN Cup.
The top scorer race closed with two Vietnamese players in the top spot. Dinh Bac and Xuan Son both scored 5 goals after 8 matches, sharing individual titles.
Notably, the Vietnamese team extended their unbeaten streak to 26 matches, including 22 wins and 4 draws. This streak of achievements started from a 1-1 draw with India on October 12, 2024 and lasted throughout the ASEAN Cup 2026.
