On May 15, Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee informed that the unit had just issued a document requesting departments, branches, and localities to drastically and synchronously implement measures to prevent and control African swine fever to control and prevent the risk of widespread epidemic spread.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, from February 8 to May 10, 2026, African swine fever appeared in 89 livestock households in 20 villages of 9 communes in the province.
The total number of pigs infected, dead and forced to be destroyed is 729, with a volume of more than 27.8 tons.
Currently, the whole province has 5 communes with epidemics lasting less than 21 days, including Gia Hoi, Mo Vang, Minh Luong, Khanh Yen and Van Ban.
In which, Gia Hoi commune is the area with the most complicated epidemic developments, accounting for about 65% of the total volume of pigs destroyed in the whole province.
According to the assessment of the Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee, the risk of diseases continuing to arise, recur and spread is still high, especially in old outbreaks and small-scale livestock areas.

Localities are required to mobilize forces and resources to detect and handle outbreaks early; organize the destruction of sick and suspected sick pigs in accordance with regulations.
Along with that, strengthen inspection and strictly handle acts of concealing epidemics, transporting and trading sick pigs, throwing dead animal carcasses into the environment causing pollution and spreading pathogens.
The Provincial People's Committee also requested to promote propaganda about the danger level of African swine fever; guide farmers to implement hygiene, disinfection and sterilization of barns, and proactively vaccinate pigs to improve immunity rates and limit the risk of disease outbreaks.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment is assigned to preside over professional guidance, strengthen disease surveillance at the grassroots level; organize quarantine, control transportation, slaughter of animals; promptly detect and handle cases of violations of regulations on disease prevention and control and food safety.
The Provincial People's Committee requests departments, branches, and localities to proactively control epidemics, minimize damage to livestock farmers, and ensure stable production in the province.
