Accompanying workers to overcome difficulties
After a serious work accident, Mr. Dang Huu Phuc (Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre) suffered an 81% disability and lost his ability to work.
Mr. Phuc said that the unexpected incident pushed his whole family into a poor household, life was at a standstill. While in the hospital, not knowing how to cope, he received warm visits and encouragement from the Trade Union at all levels. Those are precious words of comfort that he will never forget.
"Not only warm handshakes, trade unions at all levels have also promptly supported him with tens of millions of VND for treatment and to cover initial costs. That amount of money was like a lifebuoy, helping me see that I was not left behind. Next, the Social Fund and benefactors mobilized by the union to provide additional necessities, cash and local connections to help his family be considered for long-term social allowances. That help is not only material, but also a source of life, a spiritual support for the family to gradually stabilize and continue on the journey to revive after the incident" - Mr. Phuoc added choking up.
The story of fates overcoming difficulties under the support of the union does not stop there. Ms. Nguyen Thao Nguyen - a union member in Cho Lach district - also lived in an unfinished house with low ground, often flooded, which was a nightmare every rainy and stormy season. Her mother is old and sick, so she herself has to pay off unfinished bank loans.
Her tears have fallen many times when thinking about her uncertain future. But thanks to the "Union Shelter" program - an important part of "The Rear of Workers" - she was supported with 70 million VND to complete her dream home.
The day the new house was completed, she choked up in overwhelming happiness: "This shelter is not only a place to shelter from the sun and rain, but also a place to revive faith, a motivation for me to continue trying" - Ms. Thao Nguyen shared.
A spiritual support for union members and workers
Sharing about the 3-year journey of implementing the program, Mr. Nguyen Phuc Linh - Chairman of the Ben Tre Provincial Labor Federation - affirmed: "We do not only stop at supporting immediate difficulties, but also aim for sustainable stability for workers. Each house, each support period is a concern, a responsibility and a commitment of the Trade Union organization to accompany workers to the end.
According to Mr. Linh, up to now, the program has mobilized the construction of 108 houses, supporting livelihoods for 42 cases with a total cost of nearly 10 billion VND. As a result, 98 households escaped poverty, 2 households became near-poor, reaching a rate of 17.3%. In the first 6 months of 2025 alone, 19 new houses were built. 100% of cases of serious work-related accidents and diseases were visited and given gifts, contributing to spreading the spirit of sharing and effectively implementing the goal of sustainable poverty reduction in the locality.
Determining the "Helping Workers" program as a key task, trade unions at all levels have reviewed and carefully classified each target group to support the right needs, from livelihood capital to housing. Thereby, grassroots trade unions and employers better understand the situation of union members, mobilize social resources to effectively support. Many practical activities such as building shelters, a zero-dong market, health consultation, gift giving, scholarships, etc. have been implemented, contributing to spreading humanity and implementing social security work well.
"The "Helping Workers" program is not only a welfare program but also a vivid testament to the spirit of mutual love, a way for the Ben Tre Trade Union to preserve human values, spread trust, so that workers can feel secure in their attachment and dedication" - Mr. Linh added.
