Admitting more than 300 new union members
Recently, on the occasion of the 96th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam Trade Union (July 28, 1929 - July 28, 2025), the Da Nang City Labor Federation held a ceremony to admit union members and establish a grassroots union at the branch of Sen Vang Company (located in Dien Nam - Dien Ngoc Industrial Park) with 80 union members. This is the first grassroots trade union established after the merger of Da Nang and Quang Nam Trade Unions.
In fact, the Da Nang City Trade Union has a lot of work to do when it has to reorganize the apparatus at all levels at the same time, establish and launch 24 Commune and Ward Trade Unions as well as transfer the grassroots trade unions to local management. However, the task of establishing grassroots trade unions and developing union members is still being urgently implemented by the trade unions of communes, wards and industrial parks in Da Nang. Up to this point, since the merger, the Da Nang Trade Union has newly established 3 grassroots unions with more than 300 union members.
One of the bright spots in the work of developing union members in Da Nang after the merger is the proactiveness of the Commune and Ward Trade Unions in approaching units and enterprises in the area to find development sources.
The most recent example is the Nam Phuoc Commune Trade Union, from August 12 to 15, organized a working group to mobilize the establishment of grassroots trade unions at Dong Nhan General Clinic (Nam Phuoc Commune), My Son General Clinic (Thu Bon Commune), Doi Xanh Company Limited (Thu Bon Commune), Viet Nhat Kindergarten - Nam Phuoc facility. The delegation included representatives of departments under the People's Committee of Nam Phuoc commune, the People's Committee of Thu Bon commune and the Social Insurance of Nam Phuoc commune. The positive results are that not only the 4 units mentioned above are eligible to establish grassroots trade unions, but employers also agreed and expressed their desire to soon establish a trade union organization at the unit.
Focus on informal labor
According to Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Linh - Member of the Presidium of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, Member of the City Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Da Nang City, President of the Da Nang City Labor Federation, after merging with Quang Nam, the City Labor Federation set a goal of developing 51,000 new union members.
Currently, the source for developing grassroots trade unions in Da Nang has 504 enterprises with over 20 employees, 929 enterprises with 10 - 19 employees and more than 2,000 enterprises with less than 10 employees participating in social insurance. The source for developing union members is about 208,000 workers. In the informal labor sector alone (employees do not participate in compulsory social insurance), there is quite a lot of room to develop union members into unions, with about 40,000 workers.
However, with the merger making the area larger, many types of enterprises and occupations more specific - especially informal labor - while the model of commune and ward trade unions is still new; in communes and wards that are not large enough (10 trade unions and 1,500 union members or more), there are no commune and ward trade unions. Along with the shortage of full-time staff, the management and development of grassroots unions and union members in the area will face many difficulties.
After establishing 24 commune and ward trade unions, the Da Nang City Labor Federation has had specific plans and programs to direct and guide commune and ward trade unions to operate and promote union member development.
