Workers work overtime to meet deadlines

Mạnh Cường |

In early November, many companies were still actively recruiting new workers, and workers had to work overtime to keep up with production schedules.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan (36 years old) - owner of a private garment business in Nam Dinh - shared that with the current order, from now until Lunar New Year 2025, each month needs to add 50 more workers to meet the demand.

Therefore, in addition to the option of working overtime in the evening, Mr. Tuan has come up with many practical policies for recruitment. Even on Sundays, Mr. Tuan hires outside workers to work, paying 150% of the normal salary.

Ms. Pham Thi Tuoi (41 years old) - a garment worker in Thai Binh - said that the company has a scale of more than 1,000 workers but it is rare to have little work and be able to go home early. Currently, according to Ms. Tuoi, workers still have to work overtime until 7:30 pm.

"Workers with average skills are encouraged by the company to stay and work overtime from 6pm to 7:30pm. When the shipping date is near, everyone has to stay, sometimes working until 9pm before being able to go home," said Ms. Tuoi.

Ms. Tuoi knew that in early November, the factory director had announced that a large order needed to be shipped before Tet. If no more workers could be recruited, all workers would have to work overtime until 7:30 p.m.

In addition, according to the female worker, the company also allows workers to take their products home to work on. Those who have sewing machines at home or are free on Sundays will receive products to take home to work on for extra income.

According to Ms. Tuoi, although overtime only supports dinner and 10,000 VND/hour because the company calculates wages based on output, workers still accept it. Because overtime means the company has more orders and workers' income will be more stable, without worrying about running out of goods and having to leave early.

Sharing about her income from working overtime, Ms. Tuoi said she earns an additional 1 to 2 million VND/month depending on the unit price and output. With this amount, the female worker will feel more secure about her children's monthly education expenses.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong (28 years old) - a leather shoe worker in Nam Dinh - shared that overtime is the desire of many workers. Because everyone's income will be calculated based on time, overtime pay is calculated at 150% of normal working time.

“If I work office hours, my highest income is 6.5 million VND. But if I work overtime 3 hours a day, my steady income is over 9 million VND/month,” said the female worker.

Ms. Hong works overtime until 7:30 pm every day. She has to leave 15 minutes early in the morning, rest for 5 minutes after lunch, then get right back to work, no sleep. During her break, she only takes the opportunity to go out for a snack and then go back to work, not daring to rest for the full 45 minutes.

In addition, the company not only pays salaries based on output but also has attractive bonuses for teams that exceed targets. Accordingly, if Ms. Hong's team exceeds the target by 20%, each person will receive an additional bonus of 200,000 VND, making her and the workers even more excited to work overtime.
