Creating livelihoods, maintaining social security for Vinh Long workers

HOÀNG LỘC |

Vinh Long is strongly innovating trade union activities, shifting from immediate support to creating livelihoods, improving health and ensuring long-term social security for workers.

In recent years, the "Laborer Rear" program implemented by the Vinh Long Provincial Labor Federation has become an important fulcrum to help many union members overcome difficulties, stabilize their lives and move towards sustainable poverty reduction.

Mr. Phan Nhat Duan - a worker at Ty Thanh Co., Ltd. - is one of the cases to receive livelihood support. In 2022, from the 30 million VND support from the Trade Union organization, he boldly invested in raising cows to develop the family economy. From one cow initially, now his family's herd of cows has increased to 3 breeding cows, bringing a more stable income than before. Thanks to that, the family's life gradually becomes less difficult, has conditions to cover expenses and accumulate more capital. Mr. Duan shared that without timely support from the trade union, his family could hardly invest in long-term livelihoods. "I hope that in the future, more difficult workers will have access to this capital source to stabilize their lives" - he said.

Ms. Lam Thi Ngoc Ha - Chairwoman of the Trade Union of Ty Bach Co., Ltd. - informed that the shift of thinking from short-term care to sustainable care for workers is clearly shown through improving the quality of lunch meals. This is one of the important solutions to directly care for workers' health, helping them feel secure in sticking with the business.

In addition, the trade union also coordinates to organize annual periodic health check-ups, and at the same time links with many medical units to organize seminars and specialist check-ups, helping workers detect diseases early and treat them promptly, reducing health risks during labor.

Mr. Nguyen Phuc Linh - Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, Provincial Party Committee Member, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, Chairman of Vinh Long Provincial Labor Federation - informed that the "Laborer Rear" program is being implemented to support union members in difficult circumstances to stabilize their lives and feel secure in labor production. In addition to financial support, the program also focuses on supporting livelihoods, repairing and building houses for workers to develop the family economy in a sustainable direction. Many businesses have included contents on salaries, bonuses, welfare, labor safety, and working conditions in collective labor agreements at a level that is more beneficial than the law. In particular, 6 businesses have increased the value of lunch meals to 20,000 - 25,000 VND/meal.

According to Mr. Linh, trade union levels have mobilized to build 773 Trade Union Warm Houses, Compassionate Houses, and Comradeship Houses with a budget of more than 36 billion VND; supported livelihoods for 21 cases with nearly 5.14 billion VND, helping 98 households escape poverty. These care programs are affirming the role of the Trade Union in shifting from short-term support to sustainable care for workers.
