During the last days of July and the first days of August 2024, the province of Sơn la experienced heavy rain, causing significant damage to people and property, severely affecting the lives of the local residents, including union members and workers.
While cleaning up his house, searching for usable items left behind after the flood, Mr. Quàng Văn Đường (Lào village, Tông Cọ commune, Thuận Châu district) shared: “The floodwaters reached the roof of my house, all of my belongings were submerged in water, fortunately, my family was able to escape in time, otherwise, I do not know what would have happened.”
According to Mr. Đường, after the water receded, all of his family's belongings and crops were swept away by the floodwaters, and mud and soil poured into the house in thick layers.
Immediately after learning that the family of a worker at the company was affected by the flood, the management of the company, where Mr. Đường works, decided to close the office, suspend operations, and mobilize all workers to help the family relocate their property and find a new place to live.
“I am very grateful that the company's management and the trade union were able to respond promptly and provide support to my family, helping us to stabilize our living situation,” Mr. Đường said, visibly moved.
In an interview with a reporter, Mr. Lường Minh Xuấn, Vice Chairman of the LĐLĐ province of Sơn La, stated that, in response to the severe damage caused by the storm in TP Sơn La, Mai Sơn district, and Thuận Châu district, the LĐLĐ province promptly directed the trade unions at all levels to work closely with local authorities, relevant agencies, and functional units to implement measures to support and assist local residents and union members and workers in recovering from the flood damage.
At the same time, the LĐLĐ province closely monitored the situation of union members and workers affected by the flood to provide timely encouragement, visits, and support.
The Standing Committee of the LĐLĐ province established three working groups, led by the Standing Committee members, to visit the affected areas in the districts and cities to provide support and assistance to 15 households, including union members and workers, with a total of 30 million VND (3 million VND per household) from the LĐLĐ province's social fund.
Notably, during the recent flood, despite the fact that the company's trade union was only established over two months ago, it worked closely with the LĐLĐ Thuận Châu district to visit, encourage, and provide support to two families of union members who were affected by the flood. The company is still sending people to visit and assist other families of workers who were less affected.
According to the LĐLĐ province of Sơn La, in addition to direct support from the LĐLĐ province's social fund, trade unions at the grassroots level also organized fundraising campaigns to support local residents in recovering from the consequences of natural disasters in the province.
