Apple is redesigning the Magic Mouse

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple will redesign the Magic Mouse — the first since the product launched in 2009.

Throughout its 15-year history, the Magic Mouse's design has remained largely unchanged, except for the switch from AA batteries to a Lightning port in 2015 and from Lightning to USB-C in 2024. However, that's expected to change soon.

One of the most criticized points of the Magic Mouse is the location of the charging port. Users have to plug the charger into the bottom, which means the mouse cannot be used while charging.

Some Magic Mouse defenders argue that this improves battery life, and that the fact that users only need to recharge it every six weeks isn't a big deal. While there's some merit to this argument, there's no denying that the design is annoying.

However, according to Gurman, this issue will be resolved in the next version of Magic Mouse.

"Apple is working to create a more consistent product, while also addressing long-standing complaints including the charging port placement issue," said author Mark Gurman.

At the moment, we don't have any specific information about the appearance of the new Magic Mouse, other than that it will be completely redesigned, with the expectation of improved ergonomics.

“The good news is that Apple is working on a new version of the Magic Mouse. My understanding is that Apple’s design team has been testing prototypes in recent months, with the goal of creating a product that is more suitable for the modern era,” Gurman said.

The new Magic Mouse is currently in early development and likely won't launch before 2026.
