Apple has just officially spoken out about its decision to increase prices for 14 products in its ecosystem, including the entire Mac line, iPad, Apple TV, HomePod, HomePod mini and Vision Pro.
According to a statement sent to MacRumors, the main reason comes from the sharp increase in memory chip and storage memory prices due to the wave of investment in artificial intelligence (AI) data centers globally.
The consumer electronics industry is facing an unprecedented challenge. The rapid expansion of AI data centers has caused demand for memory and storage to increase sharply. We have never witnessed component prices increase as rapidly and strongly as they are now," Apple said.
The company affirmed that it has tried to maintain the selling price for a long time, but currently cannot continue to absorb all incurred costs.
This adjustment caused the prices of many products to increase significantly, from 30 USD for HomePod mini to 1,300 USD for Mac Studio. Meanwhile, the selling prices of iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods remain the same.
Previously, CEO Tim Cook also admitted that price increases are "inevitable" in the context of escalating component costs.
Analysts believe that the AI craze is changing the entire technology supply chain. Data center operators are fiercely competing to buy DRAM and NAND memory chips to serve AI servers, making the supply for consumer electronics increasingly limited.
Not only Apple, many other technology corporations such as Microsoft, Samsung, Lenovo, HP and Dell have also adjusted product prices to compensate for increased costs.
According to forecasts by memory chip manufacturer Micron, the supply shortage may last until 2027. This means that the price of technology devices continues to increase in the near future is entirely possible.
Apple's emphasis that they have only "been" adjusting prices also raises the possibility of more price increases in the future, although the company affirms that it is still looking for solutions to reduce cost pressure for users.
