What is AI slop?
After a short time, a new digital economy has been formed, where videos created by artificial intelligence are flooding platforms such as TikTok, YouTube or Instagram.
These videos are often called AI slopes, not very artistic but attract millions of views and bring significant income to creators.
AI slop are short, surreal, strange clips that are easy to produce thanks to tools such as ChatGPT, ElevenLabs or Sora by OpenAI.
They can be fake skits, surreal interviews or everyday scenes staged in an unusual style.
With low production costs, these videos quickly become a money-making tool for those who want to try their hand in the field of content creation.
When ordinary people become AI creators
One of the outstanding examples is the Monkey Vlogger channel in India. Initially, the creator posted a video of a talking monkey appearing at famous locations such as Kumbh Mela or Ghats of Kaashi.
After that, the monkey continued to encroach on the field to vlog every day, go to the market, take the bus or live like humans. The first video reached more than 1.1 million views and the channel continued to grow steadily.
It is worth mentioning that the people behind these products mostly do not have the skills to make films or produce content.
With just a few steps on the AI tool, they can easily create products that attract attention and quickly climb the suggested algorithm. Some even quit their jobs, opened courses to instruct how to copy processes and turn them into full-time work.
Challenges for digital platforms
With the explosion of AI slop, platforms like YouTube are forced to tighten policies. The YouTube Partners program has prioritized genuine content, but many channels still circumvent the rules to make money. Big brands also accidentally become sponsors when their ads appear next to low-quality videos.
Meanwhile, artists, filmmakers and real creators are concerned that their serious works will be buried under the "tsunami" of junk content.
Not only causing disruption, AI videos are also being exploited to create deepfake, spread false information and exploit users' anger.
Cheap but profitable content
Experts say that AI slop is not a technological innovation, but just a sophisticated trick to manipulate algorithms. As long as platforms have not promptly identified and rewarded quality creative products, this trend will continue to be distorted, surreal and profitable.
The explosion of junk AI videos is a warning for both users and creators, when technology develops too quickly without control, real and artistic values are easily submerged.
