Google Photos Begins Rolling Out AI Photo Search Feature

Google Photos is now rolling out “Ask Photos” — an AI-powered photo search tool — to some users.

In an update for users in the US, Google announced that “Ask Photos” is available in the Google Photos app.

This feature allows users to interact with the photo gallery using natural language, including questions like: What were Halloween costumes over the years? When will your child learn to swim? and more...

Google opened up waitlist signups for the “Ask Photos” feature in early September. But they’re just now starting to roll it out to more users.

Once the feature is available to your account, it will work across all devices, including the Android and iOS apps. You’ll see a new tab in the Photos app at the bottom bar, replacing the “Search” tab.

When you first open the “Ask Photos” feature, you’ll be guided through how it works, what data it needs to access, and confirm some information, including making sure people’s names are correctly labeled.

You also need to set relationships for people and pets. And this seems to be sorted by how often they appear in your photo library.

In terms of performance, the feature works best when answering questions related to people and places, but not so well with events or objects.

This feature isn’t available to everyone yet, but if you’ve been on the waitlist for the past few weeks, you should see “Ask Photos” pop up soon.
