Google Search has held the top spot in the search engine market for many years. But that position is gradually being shaken as competitors improve the quality of their services. And Google is being judged as becoming less and less effective in meeting users' search needs.
Currently, Google Search has just recorded its lowest market share in the past 10 years.
Google’s global market share has fallen below 90% for the past three months, marking a clear trend, according to SearchEngineLand. The last time Google had a market share below 90% for three consecutive months was in early 2015. The data comes from StatCounter, which uses information from millions of websites to analyze trends in search engines, devices used, and other areas.
There are many reasons for this decline. But a big one could be increased competition. The explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought about new search engines like Perplexity and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Additionally, privacy-conscious users are also turning to other search engines. StatCounter data doesn't go into detail, but shows that Bing, Yahoo, and Yandex saw slight increases while Google saw a decline.
Another factor is the changing way young people search for information. TikTok has become so popular that it has tested linking directly to Google Search. Google also began showing content from TikTok in its search results in early 2024.
Clearly, the future of Google Search will depend on its ability to innovate and meet user needs in a rapidly changing digital age.
