Transform to grow
The year 2024 marks Vietnam's remarkable progress in its digital transformation journey, bringing about many important achievements in digital economy, digital government and digital society. The National Digital Transformation Day event in October 2024, with the participation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, emphasized the role of digital transformation as an inevitable driving force for development, and proposed three strategic breakthroughs: digital institutions, digital infrastructure and digital human resources.
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that if digital transformation is done well, Vietnam's ranking in digital transformation in the world will increase, contributing to building and developing the national brand, thereby promoting and attracting the best investment.
"We are behind in digital transformation, so we must have the spirit to catch up, move forward and surpass," the Prime Minister said, pointing out three breakthroughs in digital transformation: digital institutions, digital infrastructure and digital people. The Prime Minister noted that this requires active participation, especially from leaders at all levels and sectors; at the same time, there must be no shortage of electricity or telecommunications signals, especially in remote areas.
The Government has focused on perfecting digital institutions and creating a favorable legal environment to build a transparent and modern digital society. Digital infrastructure continues to receive strong investment, especially in remote areas, to ensure that everyone has access to digital services. At the same time, digital human resources are focused on development through training and skill improvement, helping the workforce to be ready to meet the needs of digital transformation.
In addition, Vietnamese technology enterprises have made steady progress, contributing significantly to the country's digitalization and affirming their position in the global market. With the right strategy and the cooperation of the whole society, Vietnam is gradually building a sustainable digital future.
Opportunities for Blockchain
On October 22, 2024, the Vietnamese Government announced the National Blockchain Strategy, marking an important milestone in its efforts to apply and develop blockchain technology. This is considered a driving force for digital transformation, with the goal of turning Vietnam into a regional leader in Blockchain by 2030.
The strategy emphasizes the role of Blockchain in building modern digital infrastructure, ensuring data security, and promoting research and practical applications. The government is committed to supporting the development of reputable Blockchain brands, establishing technology testing centers, and improving the legal environment.
Ministries such as the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Government Cipher Committee, and the Ministry of Education and Training are tasked with developing policies, implementing human resource training programs, and encouraging international cooperation. The Vietnam Blockchain Association also plays an important role in connecting businesses and developing “Make in Vietnam” technology platforms.
Blockchain not only improves transparency and efficiency in data management but also opens up great opportunities in areas such as finance, healthcare, and commerce. The application of this technology promises to put Vietnam on the world technology map, while enhancing global competitiveness.
The National Blockchain Strategy demonstrates Vietnam's determination in the digital age, creating the foundation for a modern society where technology and people together create sustainable values.
5G, an important factor in digital transformation
5G network is considered a core factor in promoting digital transformation in Vietnam thanks to its superior speed, low latency and ability to connect millions of devices at the same time. This technology not only improves connection infrastructure but also opens up many development opportunities in the economic, industrial and social fields.
Developing 5G infrastructure is a key task for Vietnam to enhance its global competitiveness. Spectrum planning, broadband network expansion and 5G commercialization will facilitate the application of artificial intelligence (AI), big data and the Internet of Things (IoT). In industry, 5G supports automation, improves productivity and optimizes costs. In logistics, this technology helps manage supply chains and track goods in real time.
In particular, 5G is an important foundation for smart cities, from modern transportation systems to efficient energy management and environmental monitoring. This technology also enables new business models, such as online services, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), helping Vietnam rise in the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
The recent 5G spectrum auction marks a major step forward in technology deployment in Vietnam. It is expected that 5G will account for more than 50% of mobile subscribers in the next 5 years, contributing to the digital economy reaching 20% of GDP by 2025. To achieve this goal, cooperation between the government, businesses and users is needed to create a favorable environment for 5G development and maximize the benefits that the technology brings.
