Meta will stop supporting WhatsApp on Android devices running the KitKat operating system or earlier from January 1, 2025.

Meta - the parent company of WhatsApp, has just issued an important announcement regarding the stop supporting this popular messaging app on old Android devices. From January 1, 2025, Android phones over 10 years old, still running on the Android KitKat operating system or an older version, will not be able to access WhatsApp.

It is known that Meta's decision is to facilitate the development and deployment of new features, including functions using artificial intelligence (AI) and other modern technologies. These features require more advanced hardware, which older devices cannot meet.

Here is a list of some phones that will be removed from the Google support list:

- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 mini

- Motorola: Moto G (Generation 1), Razr HD, Moto E 2014

- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601

- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90

- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

Meta has also decided to stop supporting WhatsApp on older iOS-powered iPhones than version 15.1. However, the deadline for iPhone devices is until May 2025.

This move reflects Meta's strategy of focusing on modern technology. However, many challenges are presented to users who are not ready to upgrade their devices. Because switching to new devices will be necessary to continue using the convenient features of WhatsApp in the future.

For users who still use one of the above devices as a main or backup phone, it is necessary to back up all of their WhatsApp data to a newer device. Otherwise, the media files and chat history will be permanently lost after January 1, 2025.
