After launching the iPhone 16 lineup, Apple said that all four models this year will come with 8GB of RAM, a rare move for Apple not to differentiate between the memory specifications of the versions.
Upgrading RAM to iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus means that all devices in the lineup can run smoothly with Apple Intelligence's artificial intelligence features and have room for future expansion.
However, according to Wccf Tech, this is considered a missed opportunity when Apple does not create a clear distinction between the models, especially with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Equipping 12GB of RAM for these two models would be a notable breakthrough.
Apple watchers know that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus only come with 6GB of RAM, which makes them incapable of running the company’s AI features. This may be frustrating for users, as last year’s base models are less than a year old.
Users will have to wait another year to see the iPhone upgraded to 12GB of RAM, and this may only appear on the 2025 "Pro" models. Combining a powerful Neural Engine and enough RAM is necessary to run Apple's intelligence, so it makes sense that all iPhone 16 series come with 8GB of RAM.
In fact, the only difference between this year’s A18 and A18 Pro chipsets is just one GPU core, which makes it even less of an incentive for users to spend more money on the high-end versions. It seems like Apple hasn’t done much to bring meaningful exclusive features to the lineup.
However, according to rumors, Apple will return to its previous strategy with the iPhone 17 series. A report said that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be equipped with 12GB of RAM, while the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus will still maintain 8GB of RAM.
