ChatGPT must save the entire deleted conversation
A recent ruling from a federal court in New York is attracting global attention when it requires OpenAI to store all ChatGPT conversations, including ones that users have deleted. This move not only serves a major copyright lawsuit but also raises deep concerns about personal privacy in the digital age.
According to Ars Technic, the lawsuit was initiated by the New York Times, along with many authors and media units, to accuse OpenAI and Microsoft of using copyrighted content to train unlicensed artificial intelligence models.
During the trial, the court ordered OpenAI to stop deleting dialogue records and storing all user data, regardless of whether the user had chosen to delete or not.
Usually, deleted conversations will be permanently deleted from the server after 30 days. But with the new command, the process will be temporarily suspended for everyone who uses ChatGPT from Free, Plus, Pro to Team packages, except for Enterprise and Education accounts, which have their own privacy terms.
Responding to this request, OpenAI CEO Sam altman expressed deep concern, saying that holding back conversations has erased reasonable expectations about user privacy. However, the company is still forced to comply until a replacement order is issued.
So what should users worry about?
In fact, your deleted conversations can still be reviewed if they are related to the lawsuit. However, OpenAI insists that only a very small group of tightly controlled personnel have access and the data will not be disclosed publicly.
However, the possibility of personal messages being leaked (even very small) also makes many people worried.
In an era where the line between personal privacy, copyright and business interests is increasingly blurred, users will increasingly be caught up in legal battles.

While it is unclear how the lawsuit will end, it could set an important precedent for how AI platforms will handle user data in the future.
As a user, no matter what you intend to share with AI, you should always remember that deleted content does not mean that the content has disappeared.
