Looking at the journey of compact iPhones, we can see that Apple once tried an iPhone mini version with a small screen but it failed. Then Apple created a version with a large screen, long battery life and a cheaper price. The company even used the nostalgia factor when calling it the iPhone Plus.
However, like the iPhone mini, the iPhone Plus also failed to attract users. Therefore, next year, Apple will replace the iPhone Plus with an ultra-thin model, temporarily called the iPhone 17 Air.
Recently, Bloomberg author Mark Gurman revealed that the iPhone 17 Air will be 2mm thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro. While the iPhone 16 Pro is 8.25mm thick, the iPhone 17 Air will be only 6.25mm thick.
If this information is correct, the iPhone 17 Air will become the thinnest iPhone model ever, surpassing the record of the iPhone 6 with a thickness of 6.9mm released by Apple in 2014.
Apple will equip the iPhone 17 Air with a custom-designed 5G modem chip designed by the company itself, and this chip is smaller than Qualcomm's 5G modem chips.
Mark Gurman said Apple focused on tightly integrating the modem chip with other Apple-designed components to save space inside the device. As a result, Apple was able to create a thinner iPhone without sacrificing battery life, camera quality, or display.
