Last year, Huawei stunned the smartphone world by introducing an expensive phone that cost the equivalent of nearly $3,000.
The device, called the Huawei Mate XT, is a tri-fold phone that, when fully opened, becomes a 10.2-inch tablet with a resolution of 2232 x 3184.
Rumors of Samsung creating its own 3-fold smartphone have been around for a long time. However, this possibility is becoming more and more real when Samsung introduced its product roadmap at the recent Samsung Galaxy S25 series launch event.
Samsung's tri-fold smartphone will be developed alongside the Galaxy Z Fold7 series, a mixed reality headset and a pair of smart glasses.
These products are expected to be introduced this year. In a post on Naver (Korea), Samsung's tri-fold phone will be named Samsung Galaxy G Fold.
The Samsung Galaxy G Fold will fold on both sides; the phone measures 9.96 inches wide by 6.54 inches tall; weighs about 298 grams like Huawei's Mate XT; 36.7% heavier than the 218-gram weight of the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
The Galaxy G Fold is also expected to be 31.3% heavier than the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Apple's flagship weighs 227 grams.
The Galaxy G Fold will close inwards from both the left and right sides, protecting the large display inside when the phone is closed. The back of the phone may have a smaller cover display so users can access the device without having to open it completely. This design could add less than 1mm to the phone's thickness. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 will cost around $1,899 for the 256GB version when it launches.
Tri-fold phones are not very popular yet, especially since foldable phones still have disadvantages, such as creases. But in fact, the performance of tri-fold phones will increase compared to other smartphone models.
Adding an external display would only add to their appeal, giving users more screen space to work with; making them a better choice for anyone thinking of swapping out their Android tablet for something more versatile.
